Museo Angel Orensanz y Artes de Serrablo, España

As listed in major world museum directories, this museum of contemporary art and arts and crafts in Northern Spain was established in January 1978 by a consortium between Spanish-born sculptor Angel Orensanz; a local historical preservation society, Amigos de Serrablo; and the City of Sabinanigo. Sabinanigo is an industrial enclave nestled in the Pyrenees, a few miles from the Spanish-French border. The museum is housed in an early nineteenth century farm house originally built to guard and control the traffic of a small but strategic bridge over the river Gallego. The building is a splendid exemplar of popular, non-architect design that evolved, for several generations, according to the needs and uses of its occupants. Still present in the midst of all this organic growth is the original structure which might pre-date the Roman invasion of Northern Spain.

Since the museum was established, it has been evenly divided between the presentation of arts and crafts of the region, and a collection of sculpture and artwork of Angel Orensanz and other contemporary artists including among them the avant-garde of Denmark; group shows of Christo, Yves Klein, Jacques Lipchitz, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenbeg, Jean Tinguily and Andy Warhol, with the support of New York art galleries; and art of dissident artists from the Baltic countries, Ukraine, and Russia.

The museum grants an award to a sculptor every two years, whose work then enters the permanent collection of its contemporary art section. The collection of preindustrial tools and furniture and housewares is one of the most encompassing and well-documented in Europe. A stream of dedicated researchers and scholars has produced a remarkable body of papers and publications on language, history, popular medicine, traditions and other forms of regional culture. The museum publishes a bulletin and conducts excellent educational courses for the schools of the region.
