The Triumph of Love (Il Trionfo d l'Amor)A public art event and night of celebration. Preview of historic Carnival of Venice for the first time in New York. Spanish-American sculptor Angel Orensanz has been commissioned by the historic Carnival of Venice to design and carry the closing event of one of the most revered festivals in Europe. The New York based sculptor will present a performance on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 from 2 to 6 PM from Campo San Maurizio to Piazza San Marco. The event is supported by the Compagnia da Calza I Antichi, the authority responsible for production of a festival with the deepest roots in classical European theatre, music, literature and public life. Orensanz will roll his spheres through the center of Venice as a metaphor for our present world as a delicate, one-of-a-kind and inter-related entity. He will be accompanied by musicians and mimes from all continents in an affirmation of life, love and hope. The event in New York will be this Thursday, February 20, from 1 to 9 PM. From 1 to 5 Angel Orensanz will build an environmental sculpture 20' in diamter in the snow in the garden across from the Angel Orensanz Foundation on Norfolk St., off Houston St. This sculpture/performance will be open for the entire Lower East Side to watch and enjoy. Then, from 5 to 9, the Foundation will present a major installation of hanging sculptures related to the Carnival in Venice. Those are six formidable pieces that occupy the main hall of the building made of branches, shrubbery and light, that will remain on view until March 5th. This festive preview of Venice brings to New York for the first time a taste of a most celebrated European events The visitors will be treated to videos, live music and food. The event is free of charge and open to everybody. |
