Certificate of Excellence to the Angel Orensanz Foundation
In a static night of art, friendship and citywide support, the Angel Orensanz Foundation was awarded yesterday a Certificate of Merit, granted by Virginia Fields, Manhattan Borough President. The occasion was a brilliant reception that the Board of Directors of the Foundation offered to mark the launching of the "Friends of the Angel Orensanz Foundation". The initiative came from several community and grass roots organizations that have benefited over the years of the splendid space and programs of the Foundation. Councilman Alan Gerson opened the program with a vibrant speech of support, to be followed by presentations by Professor Lawrence Wechsler, Director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU; art critics Thomas McEvilley and Carlo McCormick and celebrity performance artist Karen Finley. The event concluded with three premieres, that constituted a vast array of art based and spurned by the art work of Angel Orensanz. Those were: "Invitation to the Ionosphere" by the Aegis group, consisting of robot generated soundscapes; Column/1 (Sabinanigo) from "Orensanz III Project" (2003) by Lev Ljova and Yuljia Muslylyan and finally, "Utopia Downtown", a documentay by videographer Caroline Conejero. The innovative use of new technologies, different artistic idioms and the use of space points to a nascent school of Angel Orensanz inspired arts. |
